Madrid wins Southwest DIRTcar Late Model race at Manzy June 28, 2008

Parker Jr Win streak was stopped by Anthony Madrid – Manzanita modified champion takes win in Late Model debut in Saturday nights 30 lap main event at Manzanita Speedway.

Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series arrived at Manzanita Speedway Saturday night June 28 with some notable driver changes, Mark Fowler was out of town for business and Jeff Manka put modified champion Anthony Madrid in the 95 car.  Other driver changes for Saturday night included, Keith Noyes replacing his dad, Wayne Noyes, modified driver, Jason Noll taking the wheel for Keith McKinney and Jerry Fincher piloting Randy Carder’s crate car.  Art Lacy, Troy Ruebke, Jeff Stafford, and Lee Hoy all made the show after long hiatus from racing.

At the start of the main, polesitter Randy Carder led the 20 car field and quickly jumped into the lead followed by Joey Moriarty, Lonnie Parker Jr, Tommy Hussak and Jerry Fincher.  From his 9th place starting spot, Madrid had moved into the fifth position by lap 4.  Lap 4 saw a red flag as Wes Hall and Lee Hoy made hard contact in turn 3, causing Hoy's car to flip wildly.  The car came to rest upside down in turn 4 and the safety crew quickly arrived.  Medics checked Hoy immediately - he was ok.

On the restart, lots of action behind Carder as cars jockeyed for position.  After several lap, Madrid had maneuvered his way into the second spot and set his sights on Carder on lap 12.  Parker Jr dropped out with driveshaft troubles and another caution came out for debris on the track.  Carder led the race to the half-way point when he made a crucial error in turn 2 and Madrid was able to capitalize for the lead.  Carder began to suffer from power steering problems as the race wore on.   Madrid slowly began to pull away from Carder who was holding off challenges from Moriarty and Mike Tahtinen.

On lap 22 Madrid had stretched it out to a straight-away lead, while the rest of the field, Carder, Moriarty, Noyes and Williams raced for the second through 5th spots.  Keith Noyes had moved up from 17th and Brad Williams was up from his last place starting position.  The last few laps saw a great battle between Carder, Moriarty, Noyes and Williams.

At the finish it was all Anthony Madrid winning the 30 lap main event and the $2000.00 first place purse, followed by Carder, Moriarty, Noyes, Williams, Hussak, Parker Sr, Fincher, Tahtinen and Jason Noll rounding out the top 10.

Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series At Forefront Of Exciting Future For Dirt Late Model Racing In The Region

PEORIA, AZ - May 24, 2008 - An exciting new era for dirt Late Model racing in the Southwestern portion of the United States will begin this weekend.

The region's popular Southwest Dirt Racing Association tour has been rechristened the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series for the May 24-25 doubleheader at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz., following an agreement reached Friday by DIRTcar Racing and SWDRA officials.

A stalwart on the Southwest's dirt Late Model scene since 2001 under the SWDRA banner, the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series now falls under the auspices of DIRTcar Racing, the brand name for the sanctioning body run by the World Racing Group of Concord, N.C. DIRTcar Racing is responsible for nearly 5,000 local and regional dirt track racing events each year at more than 125 tracks in the United States and Canada.

"We're thrilled to bring the Southwest's premier dirt Late Model series under the DIRTcar Racing umbrella," said DIRTcar Racing Western Region Director Chris Morgan. "We are working with the officials of the existing series to accomplish a very positive transition, and we have a lot of support across the board to ensure that it's done as seamlessly as possible."

"Our goal is to use DIRTcar Racings marketing muscle and organization to strengthen the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series and provide the Southwest's dirt Late Model team owners, drivers and fans more exciting races and opportunities."

The agreement between DIRTcar Racing and the SWDRA promises to bring increased attention to dirt Late Model competition in the Southwest, a region where the full-fender division is just waiting to explode like it already has elsewhere in the country.

"Dirt Late Model racing in the Southwest has been fragmented and has suffered because of it," said Manzanita Speedway general manager Steve Dunn, whose famed track outside Phoenix, Ariz., has four Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series events remaining on its 2008 schedule. "Having DIRTcar Racing get involved with the series is a big step to bring dirt Late Model racing in this region back up to where it needs to be."

Now (the Southwests) dirt Late Model racing is under one banner, one group, and has a unified direction that will allow the division to grow. It's going to be fantastic for dirt Late Model racing.

The 2008 Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series boasts a schedule of 21 events at five tracks in the state of Arizona. Four races have already been run on the tour, which visits Canyon Speedway Park this weekend for a pair of $1,000-to-win A-Mains.

Canyon Speedway Park has six series events on its '08 schedule, including the tours opener that was contested on March 8, a July 5 date and a two-day season finale set for Nov. 21 and 22. Details of the special season-ending program will be announced at a later date.

Other tracks that are part of this seasons Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series include United Sports Arizona Race Park in Tucson (March 29, June 14, Aug. 23, Sept. 27, Oct. 31, Nov. 1); Manzanita Speedway (June 28, Sept. 13, Nov. 14-15) Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande (April 5, April 26, Oct. 11); and Prescott Valley Raceway (July 19, Sept. 6).

Lonnie Parker Jr. of El Mirage, Ariz., enters this weekends action as the hottest driver on the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series. A four-time series champion and the tours alltime winningest driver, he has won three of this seasons four events and leads the points standings.

Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series

USA Racepark

Tucson, Arizona

June 14, 2008

It’s All PARKER - All the Time…………………….Win Streak now at 7 in 2008

Can anyone stop Lonnie Parker’s win streak with 7 main event wins in a row, 6 with SWDRA and one non sanctioned event in 2008?  Only Nick Bartels has bested Parker with a main event win at the beginning of the season.

Hot days finally reached the Arizona Desert but Lonnie Parker was even hotter on the track Saturday night June 14, 2008 at USA Racepark in Tucson, Arizona where the daytime temperature topped out at 107.  Polesitter Harry Harris and Tommy Hussak III, in his new #16 GRT led the field out for the 25 lap main event.  Hussak got the jump on Harris and took the lead in turn 1 followed by Brad Williams, Mark Fowler and Lonnie Parker Jr at the end of lap 1.  The yellow came out for Wes Hall who made contact with the wall coming out of turn 2.

At the restart, Williams dove to the low groove going into turn one in and got beside the leader Hussak, but the high line was the fast way around, which allowed Fowler and Parker to advance to the 2nd and 3rd spots down the back straight, putting Williams to 4th.  Jamie Throckmorton and Jerry Fincher were now running in the 5th and 6th positions.  The yellow came out again for Wayne Noyes who spun in turn 4.  Mike Tahtinen headed for the pits with a flat tire along with Harris.

At the next restart for lap 3, Fowler went off the track in turn 2 leaving Parker chasing Hussak.  Unbelievably, Fowler’s steering wheel came off in his hands as he entered the corner!   “At the time I thought, ‘That’s not good…’”, said Fowler after the race.  The car naturally turned toward the infield without incident.  “I was able to get the wheel back on without hitting anything, but by then I was almost a lap down.”  Fowler’s exit from the track caused Williams and Throckmorton to slow dramatically, losing a lot of ground to Hussak and Parker.  By lap 4, Adam Crippen had moved up from his 14th place starting position to the seventh spot passing Randy Carder.

Hussak and Parker were pulling away from the field and it looked like Tommy Hussak had a chance to pull off his first career Late Model main event win.  However, on lap 10, Parker got his break as the two negotiated lapped traffic.  When Hussak went high, Parker went low into turn one and passed Hussak coming out of turn 2.

Hussak regained his momentum and gave chase to Parker who now had over   1/3 of a lap lead on the rest of the pack.  Williams was slowly pulling away from 4th and 5th, but was more than a straight behind the leaders.

Lap 16 Wayne Noyes and Hussak made contact on the front straight with Hussak spinning ending his racing night.  Parker began to increase his lead to over a ½ a lap ahead of Williams by lap 21.

Crippen had moved into the 4th spot and was chasing Throckmorton for 3rd, making the pass at the flagstand on lap 24.

Parker wins with over a ½ lap lead followed by Williams, Crippen, Throckmorton, Fincher, Tahtinen, Carder, Fowler, Chavez and Lonnie Parker Sr rounding out the top 10.  Brad Williams was also the Sunoco Fuel Winner.
